Playing Dirty...
This election year is a very important year. It is a time that every person in this country that can vote should vote. If you sit home on your duff and have the ability to reach a polling place and can vote and choose not to then I think you forfeit your right to bitch for the next four years. If you are unable to get to the place to vote please call whomever it is you want to vote for and let them know and they can drive out an absentee ballot and you can do it through snail mail. (Snail mail is also known as the United States Postal Service.)
What is it that we're all looking for?
An answer to the economic issues that grow daily?
Making a choice between a candidate that believes in the right to choose and banning abortion?
The right to religious freedoms for all?
The right for gay couples to have civil unions and rights afforded to them that same - sex couples have?
What?
I can tell you that I do not want the government's hands in my uterus and controlling my reproductive rights. Have I ever had an abortion? No. Would I? If I had no other choice then yes I would but that is what it is about: CHOICE. Would you want me to tell you when you can and can not have children?
I can tell you that I think the last 8 years have been a complete clusterfuck of war mongering, fear mongering, and preying on those who fear another terrorist attack on American soil. I can tell you that it does NOT matter WHO is in office, how many "terrorists" we kill or hold in cells - if an attack is going to happen it will. No amount of illegal wiretapping or putting folks on "no fly" lists can stop it. I do think we need to keep our military strong, keep them on American soil and watch our backs. I think we need to rethink our relationship with the Saudis and stop kissing their ass for cheap oil. I think we need to bolster our economy not by giving more people money to blow on stupid shit but helping the middle class learn to save their money, crack down on predatory lending, and keep a watchful eye on Joe Big Corporation who is raking in millions of dollars while others go bankrupt and are foreclosed on. Did we not learn a damn thing from Enron?
I think it is time for the American People to grow a set of balls and start LISTENING to these politicians. Stop letting them blow smoke up your ass. We do NOT work for THEM they work for US. They answer to us. They are the ones that right the laws that either will help or hurt us.
I want to talk about taxes. No one wants to pay taxes and then they want to bitch when roads are falling apart, schools are underfunded, and bridges are collapsing. This country earns its money from TAXES. If you want a better country then fork the taxes over and quit bitching.
Why should someone who makes over $400K/year pay LESS taxes than someone making $100K/year? This does not make sense to me. If you make more then you pay more; it's simple math in my opinion. Even if everyone who works pays a flat tax fee of say 20% the person making MORE will pay MORE.
$400K x 20% = $80,000 in taxes with income of $320K
$40K x 20% = $8,000 in taxes with income of $32K
How can a person making 40K pay 80K in taxes? It is not going to work. Tax breaks are another issue and I think the person making LESS should have MORE tax breaks so they have more "disposable" income to further their education and have something to put in savings.
I have never understood parents who bitch about paying more taxes for their child's school, putting forth money for fundraisers, and turning PTAs in to a nazi - like regime in bullying parents to fork over the big bucks. I don't like the whole cheap shit you can buy and telling kids if the sell X amount they get some cheap ass gift. Why don't we get rid of selling JUNK and just ASK for money? How hard is that? Better education is the KEY to making our economy stronger so we have a stronger, more educated workforce in the future.
Lately I am seeing more and more negative ads. I am sick of them. I wish a politician would come along and say "I'm not using negative ads anymore. I am going to run on my platform and tell you what I can do for you. What the other guy does is their business."
Sarah Palin made the comment that Barack Obama pals around with a terrorist. Who is this terrorist? Bill Ayers. Obama comes back saying the McCain campaign is using "smear tactics" to divert attention from our horrible economic issues.
And on and on and on it goes. Round and round and where it's going to stop no one knows. I'm tired of it. Just sick to death of it.
I am ready to smack both of their heads together and say: STOP ACTING LIKE A COUPLE OF IMMATURE CHILDREN ON THE PLAYGROUND SAYING "YES YOU DID" "NO I DIDN'T"! GROW UP! THIS COUNTRY NEEDS A LEADER NOT A WHINER! THIS COUNTRY NEEDS A STRONG PERSON TO TAKE CONTROL AND NOT SOME IMMATURE COUPLE OF JACKASSES THROWING MUD AT EACH OTHER!!!!
I am worried. I am worried about the health and welfare of this country. I am worried that my children will know that depression isn't just something that can be cured with an antidepressant. I am worried that my boys may be drafted to fight a war they do not understand.
I implore every person out there to stop, research, and think before casting their vote. Do you want another 4 years of Bushisms? If not then you don't want to vote for McCain. He is so much like Bush it is scary. Sarah Palin? She's like a hockey mom on crack who wears lipstick. They both concern me. I am not a 100% supporter of Barack Obama and he was not my chosen candidate during the straw polls. It was John Edwards. I still support John Edwards and I'm sorry for what his family is going through.
But...the point is that playing dirty cheapens this entire country. It cheapens our Declaration of Independence. I have a feeling our ancestors are rolling in their graves at how so many have become so low that they put their CAMPAIGN before this country.

3 Butter Dips:
Okay...had to go get a beer before I responded, thought about "coming out" but I thought some political double speak might just work for me; seems to work for everyone else!
Thank you so, so much for encouraging people to do their own "critical" thinking and voting on the "issues", if that's even possible. As I have said before, leaning against the washer on the political spin cycle is the most enjoyment I've had in a while!
Having said that, a "flat" tax, in theory, should work. But it ain't gonna. On a limb here, I pay income tax, every single bit I owe Uncle Sam, and not a penny more. Your roads, bridges and schools come from your STATE, not the fed's.FEDERAL income tax is not mentioned in the constitution, the IRS is not even PART of the actual federal government. When WW II got costly, and the Rockefellers and the other rich guy's bailed the government out (back when they were on the "gold" standard), they set up a federal income tax, to pay back the rich guys.
Now, I haven't seen where the federal income tax goes into our government for the betterment of our "people", our SS, yes, our FICA, maybe....but the "actual" taxes owed? Hmmm, more research here I'm thinking! Would like to see how much of our "national" debt is still owed to people of our nation. It might be donated back as campaign contribution?
AND! I am tired of hearing how we should donate funds to victim's of hurricanes. Sorry, but there you have it. I have homeowners insurance. I do not have flood insurance because I do not see the need for it. However, I do have enough insurance to cover tornado damage. I made my home in tornado alley. It happens, I'm gonna cover my ass.
If I built a home NEXT TO THE OCEAN because I loved it there...I'd cover my ass.
When I publish, like, my 3rd novel and buy my dream cottage on the outer banks of N. Carolina...gonna bone up on insurance. If that doesn't cover it...oh well, I knew what I was getting into....right?
Maybe I should have posted instead of replying! Ya think?!
LOL, as always, love your critical thinking and in your face approach! I'll shut up now! (the beer I went and got is warm!)
Speaking as a complete outsider to the US system of elections, I can say that it all comes over as rather bizarre. Here in England we don't have negative ads when election-time comes around. I think it used to be illegal but I'm not sure now - I just know it's not so much part of the culture. It does creep in here and there, there was a famous poster in the 1997 election (the one Tony Blair won) which caused an uproar because it was seen as negative (you can see it here: http://politics.guardian.co.uk/election2001/images/0,9350,449562,00.html) and it didn't do the Conservative party (the ones who used it) any good - they didn't get in. Then there was another famous one (http://politics.guardian.co.uk/election2001/images/0,,449826,00.html) back in 1979 that did work for the Conservatives, but that's really as far as in-your-face negativism in election campaigns goes over here. So, yes, it is viewed as somewhat childish from this side of the pond.
Oh, and while I'm here - I have just one other comment, again, I expect it's a cultural thing and you guys don't even notice it, but can anyone tell me why exactly everytime you see anyone on American television making any kind of statement in front of a microphone there are always loads of people crammed in behind them? I'm assuming it's showing some kind of visual support but, to me (and others over here 'cos I've asked them), it just looks weird all the time! Sorry, it's been bugging me for a while and I've been meaning to ask someone and just remembered....!
I have seen more people get involved in this election, more people watch CNN, more people ask questions and get involved since any election I can remember. I cannot wait and see what happens because I think, for once in a really long time, people are going to wake up and VOTE!
